Chloe Grace Moretz starred in the original, which was helmed by Antoine Fuqua.
After opening in theaters on Sept. 26, 2014, The Equalizer, based on the TV show of the same name, performed strongly, earning $192.3 million worldwide.
Also on Wednesday, Sony announced plans for an animated Spider-Man film from the minds of LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller for 2018 and dated its new Marvel Spider-Man live-action film for 2017.
